If this is your first time here, check out the archive to see how it all started.

Pirate and Alien is updated every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Where did Pirate and Alien come from?

My brother (Ian) and I came up with the idea while we working on our first comic ODDJOB. It was to be our next project, but we've never got it off the ground. It bounced around in various animation pitches that got passed on. It's been our favorite project that went nowhere. So I decided to try and do something with it.

Are Pirate and Alien ever going to meet

Yes, yes. Right now I'm setting up the story. If you really have to know they first meet in strip #26. That's all I will say.

What was the first appearence?

Pirate and Alien appeared on the back cover of ODDJOB#2, with a one page comic called "Mall Cops."

How is Pirate and Alien made?

I write the script up on a small drawing pad in a chicken scrawl that can only be deciphered by myself. From there I rough out the strip in Adobe illustrator, using a wacom tablet, lay in the text, then draw the strip using the wacom tablet, and finally color it. And Shazam, a strip is born! When I get some time, I'll post a tutorial or how a strip gets made.

Do you have any super powers?

Why yes I do. I have the ability to pick the correct piece of tupperware for any amount of leftovers.

What's your favorite Pirate "saying"?

Oh, there's so many to choose from. It's hard to narrow it down. I like "Shiver me timbers!" "Scurvy Dog!" "Splice the mainbrace!" "Salmagundi!"

Will you draw me something?

I can doodle something up for you, drop me a line, tell me what you'd like drawn, and I'll tell you how much.

Can I buy original Pirate and Alien Art?

Seeing as the comic is digitally rendered, there is no "original" art. I guess I could try and set up high quality prints of individual strips, if there is a demand.

Can I reproduce Pirate and Alien?

If you just want to print one out to put on a fridge, or hang in a cubicle, or glue to a toilet seat, that's cool. But if you want to put it in your magazine, or newspaper or whatever, send me an email.

Do you know the difference between a Stalactite and a Stalagmite?

Yes, a stalactite hangs from the ceiling of a cave, the stalagmite comes up from the floor of a cave.

Do you think my tin foil hat will help when the aliens invade?

When the aliens invade (that's when, not if) they might take pity on your poor soul for looking so ridiculous. An MIT study has shown that tin foil hats actually do more harm than good.

Tyson Smith writes, draws, and designs Pirate and Alien. This is an experiment for me. My brother usually takes on the writing, so this is something new for me. The art style is also a bit of departure for me, I'm having fun with a loose feel.

I get some help with editing and HTML help from my wife, Laura. So if you find a spelling error, or a grammatical peculiarity, blame her!

I work as an illustrator for my day job, in Portland, Oregon. With my wife, dog, and cat. I am a filmmaker, and have directed 2 feature films. It's true, look me up on IMDB!
